How to format one cell(s) based on contents of another (Excel 2007)

I would like to format cells in columns A, B and C if the value of cell D is "x" -- I have been unable to find a solution using conditional formatting. Is conditional formatting capable of such complexity OR is there a way using VBA?

Conditional formatting should do the trick for you. See the image I've attached.
