    Unsure here

Ruir: Not sure what that is. Do you mean monitor my processes under task manager?Would I be looking for some process that jumps to the top of CPU usage when I boot Yahoo?

Jerry: Not sure I want to reset ALL the IE settings as over the years I might have tweaked some stuff (although I guess if something gets messed up I could always do a System Restore, but that seems like a sledgehammer). I do use Norton Internet Security 2012 and there is a Norton toolbar, but this is nothing new. Safe Web is enabled. But, still, why would that cause a delay the first time only?

Open Control Panel -> Performance Information and Tools -> Advanced Tools -> Open Resource Monitor.

Once open, choose the disk tab and order both the Processes with Disk Activity and Disk Activity by the Total column so that you can see which processes are using the disk and which files are involved. Compare the situation after opening IE with the situation before IE, so that you can check if there are any relevant differences.

I would try disabling both the toolbar and Safe Web as a test just to be sure. Don't know why it would only affect the first time only unless it had some sort of caching function.

Have you tried another browser such as Firefox or Chrome to see if that shows the same behaviour?

Firefox and Chrome work fine. They do not exhibit this behavior

Thanks for your continued ideas. Still no success.

Ruir: I did the resource monitor. The only thing that popped up was flashutil32....

I noticed that shockwave flash object was an add-on, so I disabled that. No difference. Is that the same as Flashutil32....?

I also disabled the Norton Toolbar/Safe Web and that made no difference.

I looked at startup under msconfig and unchecked a few things that appear to be unnecessary. I'll see if that makes a difference, but I doubt it.

Ok that rules out a random thought I had, I suggest you try Jerry's method above of resetting IE to default and see how that works (after all, you have system restore to get you back to where you are now)

    about:blank

What is your home page - I always set mine to a blank - to prevent the browser having to go to the internet and download the latest version of a
webage. Maybe with an additional plugin download too.

    tools>internet options>general>homepage>use blank (it's url is about:blank )
