Problem between laptop and projector

My laptop and projector are not getting on at the moment. When I project through the laptop, the projector is not projecting what is on screen on the laptop but only the desktop background. What should I do?
It's a HP Compaq netbook runnig Vista with an Epson projector. Any help gratefully received

Paul,

You don't mention what OS you are using but if it is Win 7 do you have the Video adapter set to use 2 monitors? If this is the case that is why you are just getting the wallpaper on the projector as it thinks it is a second monitor. You can check this by Right-clicking an empty portion of the desktop and selecting Screen Resolution. If the resulting box shows 2 pictures of a monitor that's your problem. How to fix it is mostly likely using the keyboard Function Key and the key along the top row showing a screen. On my Dell it's the F1 key which lets me move through choices of Computer Only, Duplicate, Extend, Projector only. You would want Duplicate or Projector Only.

Select "Mirrored" instead of "Extended"?

"For example, select "Mirrored" to duplicate your laptop's screen on the projector's display, or select "Extended" to extend your desktop to the projector's display."
