arrow icon overlays suddenly appear -- why?

For some reason, I have never had the detested arrow icon overlays on my desktop shortcuts. That is, until yesterday. I had just customized an shortcut icon, and all of a sudden all the shortcut icons on my desktop had the little arrows. Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to change it back to the previous state?

    Thanks,
    Ellen

This Google search shows many sites discussing how to do this.

I'm surprised that you have never had the shortcut arrow as that is the default Windows setting.

Anyhow, you can change it using TweakUI.

I was going to mention Ultimate Windows Tweaker, but then I realized we are talking XP, not Win 7. I could not remember the TweakUI app.
