Unhappy Vista Home Premium System Restore erases

    Subject: System Restore
I have Win Vista prem home System restore is a little goofy. It does not save restores from day to day, it
appears it erases it daily. I cannot figure out how to correct this. In XP I always had about 5 or more to
choose from and always back a month or so. Can this be corrected in Vista? Please advise. Bill

    Bill, welcome to the Lounge.

Have you checked the space allocated to Restore Points? Is this space still set to default?

Try disabling and then re-enabling System Restore. I assume you are choosing "Show a different Restore Point" in the System Restore app to see the available options.

Thanks Jerry. I just want like five restore points over time, that go back say one month, and not just one for one day. Bill

The oldest Restore Points are automatically deleted as new Restore Points are created and the space allocated is not large enough. There are many different things that create restore points. Many installations or uninstalls trigger a restore point. Many things trigger a Restore Point. Restore Points that are a month old will likely be gone, unless you allocate a lot of space for System Restore.

For older restoration, IMO, Imaging is the much better solution. With an Image I can bring my PC to that exact moment in less than 10 minutes.

Got all that, but why are restore points erased daily. Yesterday I put two in manually, today they are gone, and none other
created for any reason. Help. Thanks. Bill

Yes, Scheduler is not the problem as I looked at it. However maybe if you are more specific, I would know. Thanks. Bill

    Perhaps a conflicting program

When I had the combination of Windows Vista and Norton antivirus, Norton systematically blocked System Restore from working. I know that your problem is different in that System Restore does not retain its restore points. But it could be that there is another program that is wiping them out. There are cleaning programs, for example, that can eliminate the volume data that System Restore needs.

Thanks for that info. I do NOT use Norton for that reason, it messes up a lot of things. It appears to be something else.

I had exactly the same problem some years ago with XP, even restore points created manually disappeared overnight.

If I remember correctly,it turned out to caused by a fault in Zone Alarm, which was later removed after messing up the PC, entailing a complete reformat.

Something to look at if you happen to use ZA.
