    url tagging

I'd like to put a survey page on our web site that is unique for every visitor. Unique in that it would pull some data from a database, and display it on the page. When the user completed the survey, the results would then be written back to the database -- specifically to the customer's record.

I've seen urls that are something like www.yourdomain.com/survey.htm?xxxxxyyyyy where x and y are some characters.

Does anyone know how this is acheived?

    many thanks in advance!

    Re: url tagging

    The URL couldn't be .htm?xxxyyy
It would have to be something like .cgi or .pl or .asp
The bits after the question mark are sent via a Http GET request to the server; to a program running on the server. It's similar to data being sent via a form back to the server.
The program on the server uses various means to extract that data and do something with it. The means vary according to the programming language used.

    You've probably see something like:
    http://www.website.com/DataPage.asp?...&CustName=Bill

That's an .ASP page passing variables and their associated data to another .ASP page to do something with, or to a SQL Server stored procedure, or to any of a host of other possibilities. Check out your local, preferably independent <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>, bookstore for a beginning book on .ASP.
