Bob -- you wrote: Why does Microsoft have to make us all suffer because they don't get along with Sun???

As a former ' softie I can tell you we tried everything to get a working relationship with Sun. In the end I concluded (not Microsoft -- I speak for myself only) that they hate Microsoft because they resent PCs. Their people seemed to regard us PC-types as somehow inferior. They regarded PCs as toys and too dinky for their Spark and Solaris. There was nothing personal, but several solaris and unix die-hards could not resist constantly jabbing and mocking PCs (especially the PC's main component vendors: Intel, AMD and of course Microsoft, but many others PC vendors were regarded as infantile). They saw themselves as the purists and us PC-users as the heretics who needed to 'grow up'. We championed end-users and they sided with the IT/IS department. We tried. We genuinely tried hard, swallowed our pride (and a lot more besides), but in the end we left with the clear understanding that they would only be happy when the PC was abolished or turned into a dumb terminal and the power nexus shifted back to Coroorate IS and its tech-heads. I could go on, but you get the point. It's Sun that wouldn't play ball, not Microsoft. When I was there the creed was "more power to the user; more power to the PC".

    MS JVM Doesn't Work

I have a site I visit periodically to pay bills, etc., through my Credit Union. I have not been able to get onto the site with this PC since converting it to XP. I had installed the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine on this this PC. Today I went to the SUN site, <A target="_blank" HREF=http://java.sun.com/j2se/>http://java.sun.com/j2se/</A> and downloaded the latest Java. Now the PC gets onto the site properly. If anyone is having this problem, I understand that Sun now has a Java specifically for XP, although it appears to not be necessary.

Why does Microsoft have to make us all suffer because they don't get along with Sun???

    Re: MS JVM Doesn't Work

    Hi Arthur,
Thanks a lot for you clarification. I guess I should have thought of that since, having formerly operated an environmental chemical laboratory where we used Sun Sparc Stations, I am aware of Sun's mentality. Still, I was a bit frustrated by about a week of no access to the necessary site where I pay my bills. The MS JVM simply does not work as well as the one from Sun, however obnoxious Sun may be!

    Re: MS JVM Doesn't Work

    Hi
I've used XP for some weeks, and recently updated my evaluation version to the full thing. When I first got IE6 it had an older version of JVM : 5.00.3209. This is vulnerable to attack. I upgraded to 5.00.3802 from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm?FinishURL=/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=27433&PopList=11&redirect=no >here</A> which is an MS site, and it appears to work properly. I'd be interested to know where the Sun version is superior, and if convinced then I'll get that instead.

    Rgds

    Re: MS JVM Doesn't Work

To be honest, I don't know if the version I downloaded from Sun is better or not. It allows me, however, to get into sites that I need for business purposes. The URL where I found it is: http://java.sun.com/jdk/. The particular version I downloaded and installed is Java 2, SDK, Standard Edition, v. 1.3.1. Later I saw that Sun had released a version apparently just for WinXP. I checked it out, but got the message that the version I had installed was the same. Anyway, it works for me.

    Good Luck.
