Collaboration solutions (Any Version)

I'm collaborating with someone on the other side of the planet, and looking for a sensible way to manage the files we are working on. At the least, what I would like is some way to check-in and check out Word and Excel documents so that we don't make changes to the same document at the same time. Can anyone suggest any simple solutions? Is Office2000 plus a WebDAV server a viable solution?

Hello, BruceBrad!

Actually, Office XP offers a collaboration feature utilizing e-mail. You create the document. She/He reviews and edits then sends back to you. Word 2002 offers a merge changes feature.

I'm unfamiliar with WebDAV servers so possibly somone else could discuss that option with you.

Hi Bruce

You may want to check out Project Place which is an internet based collaboration server. It's designed for large projects and costs bucks if you want to use it on a multi-project scale, but they advertise that your first project is absolutely , so if you only intend to use it for one "project" it offers all the features you're looking for (plus) and doesn't cost a thing.

The email collaboration feature doesn't sound that useful. If I'm making changes several times a day, this means I have to be sending a lot of email - even if the other person is not working on the project this week. Merge changes also sounds messy. I'm amazed that MS hasn't come up with a simple check-in check-out system after all this time.
I will have a look at the projectplace site (see other post) - but it seems to be offering much more than I need (and more expensive).

Microsoft came up with something quite a while ago--Visual Source Safe. However, it isn't built into Office, it's part of Visual Studio and also, I believe, a stand-alone product. However, it relies on a single instance of VSS running on a server before you can use it the way you want. It is also resource intensive and takes quite a while to retrieve a new instance of the project.

OK -- Another place to look is www.workshare.net -- they have a collaboration product called Synergy. I haven't looked into it personally, but we use their DeltaView product at work.
