I use Acronis True Image Home (not free). I made a boot disk, boot to that disk to do all my Image creation and restoration from outside Windows. You do not have to create Images from outside Windows with Acronis, but I find it faster, and I feel there is less chance of something else interfering.

Others have spoken highly of Macrium Reflect, EaseUs Todo v 4, and Ghost among others.

I also create a new Image when I make changes on my OS. (adding or uninstalling apps, updates, etc.). I also include both my Win 7 and Win 8 RP partitions in the disk Image. This makes one Image that includes bot partitions. Then I can restore either or OS.
