    Computer Browser Service

The Computer Browser Service is set to start automatically, but it never does and I have to start it manually. As far as I can tell its dependencies are started.

How can I ensure the Computer Browser Service does start automatically?

    Advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards,Roy

Any related errors listed in the Event Viewer?

Perhaps one of the service it depends on is not starting fast enough. You could try changing it to a delayed start.

Jerry, the only item in Event Viewer I could find that might be related to the problem read as follows:

Does this mean anything to you?

Joe, I tried setting the Computer Browser Service to Auto-delayed start, but got the following error message:

"The delayed auto-start flag could not be set. Error 87. The parameter is incorrect"

What does this mean, and what can I do about it?

    Hi Roy, a few questions:
Do you have any networks shares, anything to share across your LAN?
What network type are you connected to, Public or Private?
    What security software is installed?

Joe, I have reset it to automatic, but that just leaves me where I started from.

Satrow, I share my installers and music over LAN and the network type is private.

I have on demand scanners, such as Malwarebytes, and my always on antivirus program is Avast Internet Security, but if that had something to do with the Computer Browser Service not starting automatically surely it would stop me starting it manually, and it doesn't.

When I looked at Services a minute or so after booting up the Computer Browser Service status was shown as stopping. I have never seen this before.

    Further advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

Check that 'Server' is set to automatic in services. This may be a dependency for the 'Browser Service'

What do you need the Computer Browser Service for? What is not working which you think should be using it?

I find that unless it is running the Network Map doesn't work.

The Computer Browser Service is a legacy item from the days before everyone used TCP/IP and DNS, back when Microsoft networks used NetBEUI and WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service). It was part of the old "Master Browser" model which has long since been discarded. Why its still available in Windows I have no clue. It can be safely disabled. I disable it at home, and on all of our servers and workstations at work.

Chuck, thanks for your input, but I don't understand why the Network Map doesn't work unless I start the computer browser service.

Chuck, I ran sfc /scannow to fix another problem. It successfully repaired corrupted files and now the Network Map works without the Computer Service running, so I have disabled the service.
