    HP DJ 842C Locking out

OK, now it is my turn to post a problem. A brief overview. At the beginning of each month one of our QC guys prints 10 copies of several monthly reports. He has NT 4 SP 6 and a DJ842C. The only file that he has a problem with is and excel graph that is about 87.5k. The first one locks up and nothing else will print. the ONLY out is a complete system reboot. Just over 1/2 of the time after reboot, the printer will engage and print what was not wiped out via deleting. The balance of the time nothing prints. I have gone over the PC too many times and found no problem I changed the RAM last month to no avail. I switched the printer with a DJ960C this a.m. and put the other on my desk. Unfortunately all of my bulk printing was done yesterday. Anyway I suspect the computers L2 Cache. Any ideas?
    Your time is greatly appreciated.

L2 cache is unlikely. You would have a lot more problems than just printing one file.

I use the following procedures when working with printer problems.

Reset Printer: After a print problem, Power off printer, Purge/Cancel any pending jobs, Power printer back on. This should get around the need to re-boot the system.

Print data format: Check for latest drivers. Try switching spool data format. I usually use EMF but sometimes RAW is better.

Re: HP DJ 842C Locking out

I do reset printer and cancel all pending jobs. The job that is "printing" is the problem. it does not cancel. Even an "End Task" is useless. Powering the printer does nothing. I did get the latest drivers and double checked (I do this 2x a year on every machine as part of our shutdowm/PM schedule). I have gone both ways on the print while spooling and print after spooling. The EMF and RAW is something to consider.
Update. Today he locked up the DJ960 so no printer was showing available. As a matter of fact nothing was in the taskbar (virusScan et al) After checking out and diagnosis to no avail I rebooted everything promptly came back and the page "Stuck" in the print que spit out. I am thinking about a complete system Reinstall <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15>
I printed 5 6.8 MB PDF files on the 842 from my CPU w/o any problem.

If nothing's wrong with a printer, and the same file is causing the same problem on different printer - maybe your graph file is somehow corrupted? Try to create another file, copy/paste data into it and print it.

This is a similar reply I made to another post: it may have nothing to do with the problem, but get into your BIOS and look at the Printer (Parallel Port). Set it to ECP if it is anything lower.

Oh boy did this cause a problem. Upon the first attempt to print the good old 'gobbledy gook' came out. Faces and characters at about 8 per page for about a zillion pages. I had to unplug the printer and let it set for about 5 min. While this was going on I set the printer back to Bi-Directional. <img src=/S/beep.gif border=0 alt=beep width=15 height=15>

    Hi
Remove printer driver. Change back to ECP, then reinstall with latest driver for your printer (visit HP web site if need be).

Sounds like you had some spurious printing job still pending.

Re: HP DJ 842C Locking out

Looky here now??!?! OK, we have a DjeskJet 952 connected to the system (my immediate boss kept the new DJ960 that came in for this problem) and now we get an "OLEMAINTHREADWNDNAME" error, system is entirely locked up and multiple task manager shutdowns do not work. The system was upgraded prior to this to NT4 SP6a, Office 2k SP-1, this occures in all three Excel end of the Month folders. The "OLE..." error was the precurser to all of this problem about April.
