Upgrade Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

I bought a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit expecting to upgrade my Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS to preserve my environment. The installer won't allow it. Has any workaround been developed?

You are changing versions (HP to Pro), this does require a Clean Install. Yes you will have to reinstall your apps and customizations. When you install directly into the same partition, a folder called windows.old is created which contains the Vista OS. From this you can retrieve your data, etc. (Favorites, Pictures, music, app data, etc.)

Yes, Microsoft was really not very helpful with the allowed paths for direct upgrades, for Windows 7. They could and should have done better, which would be possible, if we just look at what will be possible with Windows 8.

If you want to minimize the work reinstalling apps and migrating settings, have a look at Laplink PC mover. I used it successfully to migrate from XP 32 bit to 7 64 bit.

Also consider Microsoft's free Easy Transfer app:

You still have to reinstall all your apps but Easy Transfer will copy over all your user data and settings in one go.
