Brief lock ups in Windows XP

A number of times I have moved the mouse over the All Programs button on the Start Menu and a grey box has appeared where the menu should be and the mouse and keyboard lock up. A few seconds later the disk drive whirrs and the menu appears. I am running Windows XP Home on a Pentium III 1 GHz notebook. Has anybody else experienced this or is it more likely to be a hardware problem then XP related?

    Thanks

    Steven

    Hi
See if this continues if you select Classic Start Menu. Being used to Win 2k, this is one aspect of older OSs I prefer over XP's Start Menu.

Thanks for your reply. It happened with both menus (it also seemed to affect other applications, it locked up when clicking on menus or toolbar buttons). I eventually phoned the manufacturer who suggested I used the recovery CD supplied to wipe everything and reset it to the initial factory settings. This worked. I had experienced the problem before installing anything so I think there must have been a corrupted file somewhere.

    Thanks
