Windows Media Player can do all sorts of tricks, that's why i'd reccomend VLC player - plays everything without any issues.

Did you try WMP with more than one video file?

Always download any file you have to a secure location on your HD, and have your AV/AM software scan it first prior to opening and running anything in email.
You should never be running any attachment from your email client, from links or otherwise.

I would do a complete scan in safe mode with Malwarebytes Antimalware. Depending on the malware you might or might not be able to download Malwarebytes from that PC. Download to a Flash drive, boot to safe mode and run a full scan.

Malwarebytes found an Adware agent, but still no video

Does this affect more than 1 type of video files?

You can also try VideoInspector, which may help by telling you if you are missing any video codecs.

There was a warning on the site that Chrome would do it. It's recommended software from some sites (softpedia, for example). This browser thing is a trust system, doesn't mean it's malware, although I can't say it isn't. I doubt it is, though. Probably not enough people haven't download it yet.
