Play a dvd over a network.

I have a pc with dvd drive and an ultrabook with none. I have shared and mapped the pc's drive over my network and can see and access the drive from my laptop. I have been able to run software installation programs from the dvd drive with no problems. I cannot, however, find a way of playing a film dvd from this drive. Having done some searching online, it seems to be a commonly reported problem, but no-one seems to have a definitive answer.
Is there a way in which I can do it?

Both computers are running Windows 7 Home Premium and I have been attempting to use Windows Media Center and Media Player with no success.

Try using VLC unless you are trying to play a Blu Ray DVD. Neither Media player or VLC supports Blu Ray.

if you are trying to play a Blu Ray DVD, you could try downloading VLC and following the instructions here: http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/
