That is a pretty big naming mess as far as MS is concerned, especially on the verge of a release to have this sort of thing come up.

You would have thought MS would have thoroughly researched Metro to see if it was copyrighted protected already. Especially after all of the fighting with EU over having IE in Windows. They should have known they would be circling like vultures look for something else to litigate.

Frankly, even if it is indeed a blunder (and it is), this has no influence on anything either in the phone OS or the Windows. I fail to see what does the name affect from a users point of view. Ed Bott's criticism on this even looks a bit silly, as it is totally innocuous.

IMHO the change of name is highly relevant to users, because the Metro name has become established usage in tutorials, forum discussions, etc. It might also be used in Windows 8's own help files, with it presumably being too late to be changed now. The change of name will lead to the general public becoming even more confused.

I use Windows Phone 7, where Metro was started. There is not a single reference to the name in the OS interface, that I can remember. In my (not so heavy) experimenting with Windows 8, I haven't seen the name, either. I am guessing, user wise, we'll keep calling the interface Metro and it won't matter, because we will just be referring to a concept, so the name is totally irrelevant. I personally doubt Metro as a name will be abandoned any time soon, although it will surely be dropped from MS documentation, especially programmer' s docs.

I agree with Rui. It's just a name. Has it changed this excellent OS in the least.... NO

Jerry, I call Microsoft out when they deserve it. I have been highly critical about their cryptic and confusing licensing policies and I was the single leading critic of the misguided WGA effort when it was launched.

Ed, I have read your articles on Zdnet for some time. I don't always agree with you but find your articles interesting and well written. It does take something pretty wrong for you to write a negative article. Thats why I was shocked to see this one. As I said in my original post, I can't remember reading one of your articles that was negative towards Microsoft. I must have missed the the two you cite.

Even without this ability it is a one click option to get to Desktop. If the desktop tile is moved to the Upper, Left position on the Win 8-Style UI, as soon as that UI opens, tap the Enter key. You will be taken to the Desktop.

If, after entering the password, you hold down the Enter key for a couple of seconds, the same thing will happen.

Yes, in both cases you will temporarily see the Win 8-Style UI, but will quickly be transported to the Desktop UI.
