Windows Live Mail - Expand Folders ?

I have just bought a new PC with Win7 and I'm trying to configure WLM..

When I receive an email message, I hear the sound when it arrives.
However, the inbox folders which I have set-up, and linked to message rules,
do not automatically expand to show the presence of a new message.
Nor do I get a "(1)" beside any relevent parent folders.

I do get the (1) after I expand the relevent folders manually. But if they
are collapsed, and if I don't hear the sound, I often miss the email.

I have, checked the box "automatically expand grouped messages".
But I can't find any other options..

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that is the same as it was with Windows Mail (the program before WLM) and Outlook Express. You have to expand the folders beneath the parent folder before you see a number indicating there is a new message in a sub folder. Just go ahead and click and expand the parent folders you usually use. I just leave email program open all the time, so I don't have to repeatedly expand groups of folders. I think perhaps the expand grouped messages may be talking about threaded messages, if you have opted to thread your messages (keep "conversations" together). If you liked outlook express or windows mail, you can still run Windows Mail (which is almost identical to OE) in Windows 7. Do a search at sevenforums.com for instructions. Follow the instructions on the first page of the lengthy thread - you can ignore the rest of it - if you follow exactly, you'll succeed. Basically, all you have to do is download a missing .dll file and make sure you are following directions for 64 bit windows if that's what you happen to have.
