    It ran the developer preview quite happily though

    The only way I could upgrade what I have is to source some very old expensive memory or upgrade the Mobo/Processor & memory which I can't afford.

    That is too bad. I have heard of people running on pretty old systems, but there are some that don't.

    One difference is the extra CPU security that has to be enabled beginning with Win 8 RP. This is the first OS that MS has decided to enforse this feature. To install Windows 8 Release Preview on your PC, the processor (CPU) must support the following features: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2. A Google search has more info.
