Can I save numbered outline to txt retaining #s? (Word 97, Win 95)

I need to save a numbered outline to a txt file, but also need the numbers retained in the txt file. While I could just manually put them in, I was hoping to have the power of Word do the numbershifting. My research so far has been fruitless. (by the way I really like these smilies. It puts a little humor back into a humorless situation. )

Any help would be appreciated.

Cindy,

I don't know think there's a way to do this directly in the Word interface, but it can be done with a little VBA. If you're game, here's how to do it:

Make a copy of your original file.
Make sure that the copy of the original file is the active document.
Press Alt+F11 - this will take you to the VB Editor.
Take a look around and see if there is a pane open with the title "Immediate" in the title bar (there probably won't be). If it isn't open, to open it press Control+G.

Now, in the Immediate window, type or paste the following:

ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText (wdNumberAllNumbers)

make sure the insertion point is at the end of that line, and then Enter.
You can then go to File > Close and Return to Microsoft Word to close the VB Editor (or alternatively click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner).

Back in your Word copy document, the outline numbering should look the same, but note that what previously were autonumbers can now be selected - they're now manual numbers.

Then you can just save as a .txt file or alternatively copy the content and paste it into a text file.

You can simply select all (Ctrl+A) in your original document, and then paste it into a new WordPad document. The outlining and numbering stay, but the numbers become "regular" text.

Next, save the WordPad document as a Word document. When you open the Word document in Word, you'll find that the numbers are still "text".

It seems easier than using VBA.

Thanks Larry,
This really sounds "doable". I was willing to give the VB a try, but was a bit intimidated. Thanks again
