Clever malware masquerades as system scanner

    By Susan Bradley

When an unexpected alert appears on screen, warning that your system needs repair and paying a small fee will fix it, chances are high it's malware.
Here's a true story of how one such infection hit an experienced PC user and the steps you need to remove it — and how we all can stay vigilant in preventing such attacks.

Had the same thing happen to my son's computer. Mbytes found the problem but could not remove all of it. The rogue resurfaced after rebooting. In these cases I reboot using UBCD4Win bootable CD which has been set up with anti-spy anti-virus programs. This allows removal of rogues without booting into the hdd system.

One tool which should be mentioned in these cases is Windows Defender Offline (WDO). This one also is independent of the infected PC's OS and hard drive.

Seriously consider restoring from a system imaging and restoration rescue CD or rebuilding completely in these cases. That's often the least time consuming option, even though it isn't without time and effort costs.
