Office XP/2000 Warning (2000 and 2002)

I'm posting this here as a general warning, but I'm also posting links to it in the Access and Visio forums as well.

I just discovered the hard way that there may be serious problems trying to run both Office 2000 and Office XP on the same machine. I'm running Office 2000 but installed Access XP in order to become familiar with it before I actually had to start developing in it. Suddenly, I started having corrupted objects and corrupted databases in 2000 and kept getting the error message

Error accessing file. Network connection may have been lost.

What made it even scarier, was that if I exported a form to a new 2000 database and sent it to a client who did not have XP, any attempt to import the object into a database on their machine either failed weirdly or corrupted their database.

I found knowledgebase article ACC2000: Err: Error Accessing File. Network Connection May...[Q304548], which indicates that the problem occurs when you have both Access 2000 and version 6.3.91.8 of the Vbe6.dll installed on the same machine. Unfortunately, that's the version installed by Access/Office 2002 and Visio 2002.

The "workarounds" in the article didn't work for me, and so far Microsoft's best recommendation is "upgrade to 2002", which is not an acceptable solution in my case. The only recourse was to remove Access 2002 and copy the original version of the dll from the Office 2000 SR-1 CD.

"Upgrading" to any product that includes the Registration/Activation Wizard is not an acceptable solution to me.

Set up a dual boot system and install only one version of Office in each bootable system.
