no internet connectivity after windows automatic update aug 15 2012

Hello, running a little 2 pc network - both pc's have xp. This a.m., both had had automatic updates. One of them could not get an ip address. The other was ok browsing & email. Recycled both my modem & router, now both pcs cannot connect to net or get ip's. Anyone have any info re this problem after the latest updates from Microsoft and/or a fix? Have tried all kinds of re-boot, ipconfig, last known good configuration, etc.

    Thank you for any help!

You might Restore to a System Restore point prior to the updates. If you get it working again, then try adding the updates one at a time to see which might be the offender.

Thanks for your quick reply! Can you please remind me generally how to do that? I am pretty technical, but have had so little problems with my systems over all these years, I can't remember how to do that. Point me in the right direction?

Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.

I do not have XP installed, so from here you should be able to find your way.

Were any of the updates new hardware drivers? Open Device Manager

Click on Start and then Run.
Type the following command in the Open: text box, and then hit the Enter key or click on the OK button.
    devmgmt.msc

Check to see if there are any errors indicated usually marked with a yellow exclamation point.
