Unable to select drive to install Windows 8

Trying to do a clean install of Windows 8 RTM from USB flash drive. After getting to 'Where do you want to install Windows?' screen, Drive 1 shows that it has 596.2GB of free unallocated space. After selecting Drive 1 as location to install, receive this error message: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files." Also receive same results if try to install on Drive 2.

    1. Don't know how to access said log files.
    2. Would anyone have advice on how to proceed?

    Thanks in advance.

    A guess:

Was the machine booted from the USB stick, or did you launch the installer from within Windows?

If Windows is running underneath, the installer will not be able to run the partitioning tool.
