Keyboard shortcut for Style drop-down list? (2002)

Can anyone tell me how I can distinguish between the Style drop-down list (the one that appears in the Formatting toolbar) and the Style dialog box (the one that appears when you are creating/editing styles)?

I'd like to make CTRL-SHIFT-S apply to the style drop down list, but I can't figure how to "get to it" from the Customize dialog.

    Thanks!

    Hi Arianna,

In my German Word2000, Ctrl-Shift-S is already assigned to the style drop down list.
In the keyboard customization dialog (Tools > Customize > Keyboard... > Category "All Commands"), you should find it under "Style", and the Style dialog box under "FormatStyles" (at least if my translation from the German version is true).

    Regards, Klaus

    Thanks for the reply!

--- Interesting. I checked my settings in the Customization dialog and my shortcut is set up the same as yours; yet using the shortcut still pulls up the Style dialog, rather than putting the focus on the Style drop down list. I even tried deleting and recreating the shortcut, but I still get the same behavior. Am I missing something, or is Word getting squirrely on me?

    Thanks,
    Arianna

Is it maybe 2002 that is squirrely? In English XL2000, Ctl Shift S, highlights the current style in the drop-down list. Sorry I don't have 2002. --Sam

One thought: Is the drop-down on your Formatting toolbar, or moved to a different or custom toolbar? If I close the Formatting toolbar, I get the Styles dialog. Even if I create a new toolbar with the same drop-down on it, with the Formatting toolbar closed, I get the Styles dialog. I am using 2000.

Funny, in my German version (2000, SR-1), I always get the styles drop-down with Ctrl-Shift-S, no matter if it's on the formatting toolbar or on some other toolbar.

And with the American version, I also get the styles drop down box, whether I use the Formatting Toolbar or my Custom Toolbar. But if I remove either the dropdown box button or do not have a toolbar with the button showing, the Styles dialog box pops up. Gee, remember when pressing Ctrl+Shift+S once gave you the box & pressing it twice gave you the dialog box (Word 95 & earlier). <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21>

Back after the weekend-- thanks for all of your responses!

Good thought on the toolbars... I have the Style drop down on both a custom bar and on the Formatting toolbar. And unfortunately, nether of them respond to CTRL-SHIFT-S. I've tried turning off all my customizations (stored in a separate global template) and going back to my (theoretically) pristine normal.dot. Still no dice.

Did you try resetting your "Formatting" toolbar (or deleting your normal.dot and having it get recreated to ensure that it really is "pristine")?

I had had this exact problem with Word 2000 SR-1. The problem appeared to be that the Ctrl-Shift-S command only works on the styles drop down box that comes with the default Formatting bar but not with the styles drop-down box that you can add to an existing toolbar through the Tools | Customize GUI.

The only way that I was able to get the Ctrl-Shift-S functionality on a custom toolbar was to drag the drop-down box from a reset formatting toolbar onto my custom toolbar.

    Hope this works in 2002!

You hit it dead on... on all counts. Recreating Normal.dot was what did it ( so much for pristine! ). And dragging the Style box from the Formatting bar to a custom toolbar let me get what I was looking for.

    Thanks a bunch!
