This has been heavily discussed in social networks (like twitter, a good source of info) in the last few days. It looks like a baseless rumor. That price is way too low and it would destroy any attempt to make any money with tablets, now or in the future. It simply makes no sense, IMO.

Personally, I, also, doubt we'll see it, even, as an introductory price. Granted it might well come down from an original price but, this seems a bit far-fetched to me, as well, starting @ $199. As the article says, would PO people if the price went up instead of down. Fun the stuff to read that surfaces, though (excuse the pun, teehee)

    Cheers,
    Drew

I agree, it's never gonna happen. At 199.00 there will be too big a loss by the seller, and one would have to seriously wonder about
the quality of such a cheap product.

    Its here! And it's $199.00.

As far as quality, the B&N Nook tablet with 8GB is very well made. I'd be very surprised if Google couldn't at least match that quality.

This is not an e-Reader. And Google has nothing to do with it. Every Surface device has a full-fledged MS Operating System (or at least Win 8 RT ). That cost alone is over $150 USD per unit, so I doubt very much that the whole device can be sold in US markets for so little.

The surface is built by Microsoft, Bob. I doubt they would "charge" themselves for the OS, though I agree that it will be much more than that.

I know it's not a "charge". It's just the typical added cost to third-party devices. Yes, MS could just write off that cost and the price would be more plausible, but I don't think MS has announced that they are doing that for Win 8 RT. Have I missed something?

There are no prices known at this time. Only statement available is that Surface tablets will have competitive prices.

True. But I won't believe a $199.00 Surface Tablet until I see one.

I don't either. Actually, I think it would be stupid. They would kill the market for everyone else and I don't see how they could make money on it.

I saw an headline, today, from a Steve Balmer interview, where he stated the sweet spot for Surface would be between 300 and 800 USD.

That is the expected amount for the Surface RT with the Surface Pro as something higher.
