    Vista Locked in endless loop

After downloading microsoft updates in early August my Vista laptop has been locked in an endless loop. It got to the point of telling me that it was--
configuring updates Stage 1 of 3 0% complete do not turn off your computer.
It has remained unusable ever since. Every time I try to boot it starts repeating--configuring updates etc.
I have tried repair from the Vista DVD with no effect. In its present state the laptop is a useless piece of junk.
    Has anyone any suggestions?

You might have to do a complete re-install of Vista.

Have you tried to boot in safe mode?
