Spell checking with a protected form (Word 97 S/R-2)

    If you protect a form (Tools, Protect Document, Forms) that contains Text Form Fields, the user fill out the fields. If the user wants to check spelling (Tools, Spelling and Grammer) you'll notice that these options are greyed out. If you unprotect the form to perform spell checking and then re-protect the form, the information that the user typed disappears because the form resets.

    Are there any work-arounds?

    TIA - Gene

    Hi Gene:

    A couple. First, if you unprotect the document & lock all the fields (Ctrl+F11), you will not lose text form fields. If you create documents from a template, you can lock the text formfields in the template. This will not stop you from typing in them. This workaround will not prevent checkbox & dropdown formfields from resetting, however.

    For the best solution, you need a spell check macro. You can go to this site:

    Hope this helps.

    In addition to what Phil has said, somteimes you might want to unprotect for more than spell checking. You can mak a little macro to reprotect without losing the form fields:

Sub ToolsProtectDocument()
    ActiveDocument.Protect Type:=wdAllowOnlyFormFields, noreset:=True
    End Sub

    This will intercept the built-in protection- and protect text fields, dropdown boxes and check boxes.
