    Master Index creation / Inadvertent Master TOC creation in Word 2010

    Hello all!

    I have a question, which I haven’t found much help using a google search, but hopefully someone here may have the answer:

    I am creating a master index that spans multiple documents and have embedded the master index at the end of each of the files. The problem I am seeing is it appears that since I added the RD fields at the end of the document for the INDEX, Word (2010) is also creating a master Table of Contents for me as well.

    Although this sounds great, it is not desired for this instance. So basically, I just want the INDEX to span the multiple documents and the Table of Contents to span the single/particular document

    The TOC field code is:
    {TOC \O "1-3" \H \Z \U}

    And the INDEX field code is:
    { INDEX \e " " \h "A" \c "2" \z "1033"}
    { RD \f “Doc 1.doc”}
    { RD \f “Doc 2.doc”}

    Does anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this? Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Try adding a bookmark switch to the TOC field.

    1. Select all content you do want to build the toc with and bookmark it eg "InTOC"
    2. Modify the TOC field code to read {TOC \O "1-3" \H \Z \U \b "InTOC" }
