    Updating a hyperlinked footnote reference

I have hyperlinked to a subseuent footnote (#9) in footnote #7. However, when I insert another footnote in between #7 and #9, Word will update #9 by itself, but not the hyperlink in footnote #7. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Use a cross-reference not a hyperlink.

    Hi jlkirk,

Is there a reason for not using footnote cross-references, rather than hyperlinks? The problem with using a hyperlink is that the display text doesn't update to reflect a change in the referenced footnote's number.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately, when I try and do as you say (using cross-reference to footnote #9 in footnote #7, it still won't update. Any ideas? Thanks again.

With the cross-reference, a change to the footnote number should be reflected upon a Print Preview of the document.

Thanks Paul, yes it does show up in print preview. However, is it possible for it to show up when I am otherwise editing the document?

Cross references are updated when you select it and update the field by pressing F9.

Not in a dynamic sense. As Andrew says, you can update one by selecting it and pressing F9, but switching to Print Preview & back is more efficient if there are numerous such references - especially if you add the Print Preview button to the QAT. Do bear in mind that this is only ever an issue if you add/delete footnotes before the one that is cross-referenced.
