    Section numbering (Word 97 SR-2)

    This may be obvious, but I can't figure it out. <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

I'm compiling a single document which is being generated by multiple people, each with their own style-sets. That wouldn't as much of a problem, but some of them are using numbering for the primary header styles, and our requested format is to have all numbering manual. How can I copy the automatically generated section numbers into text fields where they can be edited? For example, there is, in the document, a line with "Header 5" style which currently reads:

    <pre>5.4.2.2.1<tab>Text</pre>

where the 5.4.2.2.1 is not editable by any obvious means, and I like to see:

    <pre>Section 5.6.2.2.1<tab>Text</pre>

where all of the text is editable.

The particular document I'm pasting at the moment has header levels 2-5.

    Any ideas?

The trick suggested by Gary Frieder in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=90725>Post #90725</A> works for your situation in a test I did in Word 2000. You would run this in the original document (or a copy of it) before adding it to your combined document. By going into Outline view first and adding a few headings, you probably can bump up the numbers to where you want them, and save some editing later.

You can also do it by copying everything to the clipboard, and pasting it in Wordpad. Wordpad will retain the numbering, but change it to text. Then copy it back to the clipboard from Wordpad, & finally back into Word.

I know it won't solve your immediate problem but why not overcome the situation by supplying the people who will be creating documents with a template set up the way you want them to work? The long tern effect is that future projects will run smoother.
