Without the Zen software, you have no drivers. For some devices, Creative had the drivers separate from the software for the devices, but that doesn't seem to the case for this one. Try downloading the software for the device.

have spent an hour on creative site, the auto update just goes round in circles in terms of intructions. mamualy dowloded software but it needs "latest version of WMP"...brick wall ..any ideas. and MS wants to verify [wrong term] my versionof windows, which will not be possible anyway

If you only want it as a storage device, and Windows "sees" it, does it show up as a drive in My Computer ?? If it does, you should be able to drag and drop files to it.

Does the installation proceed without WMP? If it does, just go along, all you want are the drivers.

Try this driver pack and, as ruirib said, just try to push your way through the installation process. If it won't let you, you might try installing the drivers on a "compatable" system and then copying them to your system.

Or you could install WMP so the drivers get loaded, then uninstall again. The uninstall process usually leaves drivers behind..

If that doesn't work, I fear I can't suggest anything else.
