INDEX

One sometimes comes in late to a thread and doesn't know all the stuff that has been discussed. Is there an index of threads one can go to for viewing all of the threads, rather than trying to seach on a phrase or clicking thru all the pages (there's already too many on this lounge to go looking for the answer)?

Thks

Fred

Re: INDEX

It's fairly easy to skim through a thread if you view it in flat mode.

Re: INDEX

Hi Eileen,

I didn't think I made myself clear. Let me try again.

The various lounges have been running from around 1/1/01. I join a lounge in March. Where can I go to see what threads have been discussed. For example, before posting a new question, I might want to see what's been discussed in the past and maybe get some ideas. However, having to click thru 10-15 pages could be a chore (eg, I've noticed that some of the lounges already have 10 pages when I group 10 threads/page). This is particularly true when accessing the lounge from home thru my employer's firewall (needs to detect proxy settings each time I go to another page).

So what I was looking for was an index of past threads - one thread per line but all threads on 1 web page.

I don't know if the 14-day limit that I noticed might be a problem.

Also I looked at the flat mode. Another question is whether I can switch to flat mode for a particular thread. Being able to see all of the correspondence in a thread at one time is great - if that's what I want. In general I probably would want to work in threaded mode. Now suppose I see a thread that interests me and I click on the first/parent item. That intrigues me even more. So I want to read the entire thread (or until I give up). Currently, if I'm in threaded mode, I have to go back to the previous page and click on the next item. See above on firewalls, proxies, etc. over dialup. So now I'd like to switch, for this thread only, to flat mode. Can it be done?

Thanks.

Fred

Re: INDEX

What you ask for is basically how we have it. It sounds as though you're viewing the Boards in Expanded View. If you switch to Collapsed View it will make it easier for you to scan through the thread topics. There are buttons to do this easily at the top right of the list.

You can switch backwards and forwards between Threaded Mode and Flat Mode with the buttons on the top right when you're looking at a message.

Re: INDEX

Eileen,

I think we're converging. We 1/2 way home.

1. I am in collapsed view. But that just shows me the parent item of the thread. This is not an index of all pages.
Example: 23 individual threads (not emails in 1 thread) in a lounge and I view 10 threads per page.
Page 1: see threads 1-10 with parent only in collapsed view. see 10 threads with all email (say 5 emails for thread 1, 4 emails for thread 2, 9 emails for thread 3,...) per thread in expanded view.
Page 2: ditto page 1 for threads 11-20
Page 3: threads 21-23.

So collapsed vs expanded does not change the number of threads I see on a page - just changes the number of lines/emails for the 10 threads I see for that page.

Where can I see threads 1-23 in 1 place (ie, an Index)? In fact, I don't want to see the individual emails in a thread until I decide I'm interested in it. Hence, collapsed view. But switching to expanded only expands the threads on that page. It does not seem to bring threads from other pages onto the current page.

2. Thks for the pointer on the threaded vs flat mode. That was what I was looking for.

Re: INDEX

Hello! At the top of the lounge, click on Edit Profile. Button 2 is "Edit Display Preferences." The default is 10, but it is capable of a 3 digit number (such as 200).

Karen,

Did you mean to add "Total parent posts to show per page:" to the message?

The maximum actually allowed is 99- but that's plenty- in threaded mode, that could lead to some very poor responses.

But of course.

Thanks for catching that, Geoff... and now I must go repair my sig. I guess I hit submit somewhere instead of "back".

Thanks again for the quick pick-up on that!
