This is way beyond my level of experience, and probably competence!! I suspect I would end up with a dead computer.

I have thought of dong a Factory reset which is straightforward enouhg. Do you think this would help?

    Thanks

A factory reset/recovery will do nothing if the problem is in hardware, you need to test that the RAM memory is good, if it isn't, no amount of software changes will make it work reliably.

If tests show that the memory is bad, changing it is a relatively painless task - except to your wallet.

Based on all of the above commentary, this is probably not the cause of your problem, but it was for me in a similar situation, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

My video card went bad, and it was overheating. This was causing problems similar to yours. I discovered it by running speedfan, which shows the temperatures of the various internal components.

Download speedfan and run it. It's a free program, and it takes only a few minutes. Speedfan will show you if there is an overheating problem, and if so, where it is.

I've run the memtest 86 overnight - I think it did 11 tests - and no memory problems were found.

I've run the Dell daignostic hardware test, and it has found no problems.

I need to decide whether I dare try out the driver checking test.

In the meatime, I've turned off the Carbonite backup program which I am suspicious about, and am waiting to see if I get another crash.

Will keep all posted - no new is good news!!

    Thanks everyone for advice

Have now had 10 days crash-free with Carbonite turned off.

Have turned it back on again to do more backing up, so will wait and see if/when there is another crash.

Still no crashes though Carbonite still running.

I guess I now have to treat it as 'if it ain't broke, don't fx it' - at least for now......

    Thanks for keeping us updated.

Yup, that's about all you can do is to sit and wait; adding, removing or changing anything at this point might mean troubleshooting starts over should it result in another BSOD - unless you try to force a 'bad' driver to show itself by using Driver Verifier. I think I'd wait for a quiet weekend or the next crash
