date countdown

I'm trying to create a word document that will allow a user to input a date, and then in a separate area of the sheet, calculate a day countdown.
basically, user inputs date of 10/1/12, the 'separate area' calculates the user input date of 10/1/12, adds 30 to it, then based on the current date, displays the days remaining until the 30 days is up. all dates are auto calculating, except the first user input date (in this case, the 10/1/12).
any thoughts or suggestions? never tried something like this in word 2010.
    thanks

Sounds like it should be in Excel rather than Word. Unfortunately, there aren't any complex formulas available in Word tables.
Date calculations are not in the domain of Word.

You could insert an Excel spreadsheet object in the Word document and then use the Excel features for dates.

To see how to do this and just about everything else you might want to do with dates in Word, check out my Microsoft Word Date Calculation Tutorial, at:

In particular, look at the items titled 'Interactively Calculate A Past Or Future Date' and 'Calculate the # Days Difference Between Two Dates'. Do read the document's introductory material.
