    IE9 replaces download filename . with _

I've just encountered this 'feature' in IE9, as reported here [1]

"I'm currently trying to download files from IE9 and right now, after downloading all the periods are replaced with underscores, thus preventing windows from determining its file extension."

So for example, 86338939.6.pdf becomes 86338939_6_pdf and generates an error message: '86338939_6_pdf couldn't be downloaded'

I've followed some of the advice from Microsoft Community [2], e.g., running the Windows 7 System File Checker, however SFC subquently messed up my backup software installation such that it currently cannot be re-installed !

Has anyone else met this IE9 download problem and fixed it ? (it's not been evident in IE8/WinXP)

The problem was a corrupted User Profile/Account in Windows 7 - this has been remedied by creating a new profile [+], as a replacement.
