Windows Explorer: can't see thumbnail previews of PDF files in lower pane

I've googled this until I'm so frustrated that I could just spit.

For a long time, I was able to click on a PDF file and see a preview of it in the (I don't know what it's called) lower portion of the Explorer pane (not talking about the Preview Pane on the right side of the display). I can't do that anymore...I can see all the BMP, PNG, JPG, GIF, etc file thumbnails, but not PDFs. I recently updated Adobe Reader & that didn't work, so I uninstalled it. I installed Foxit Reader and that didn't help. I've read things about "preview handlers". I've seen suggestions to edit the Registry, or go to Adobe & download the latest Adobe Reader because that supposedly would fix the "can't display thumbnail" issue, or run someone's Fix program, etc etc.

Nothing works!! It's driving me batty!

I've even tried looking for an add-on program that would restore this functionality. Can't find anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions that will actually get PDF the thumbnails to display again?

Are you talking about the status bar? I have never seen a preview there. The Preview Pane is shown in this screen shot (This is Win 8, not Vista or Win 7)

Or perhaps are you talking about the Thumbnail previews on the bottom Taskbar?

Now Connie, don't get batty! You will be the same as us then! LOL

    Hi Doc,

Thanks, but "been there, done those" a while back (along with a lot of others). I've been working on this problem off & on for MONTHS.

Ted, If I WERE the same as you all, I'd be answering instead of asking!

It's the Details Pane at the bottom. Here you can see the Details pane and all it show is the generic Foxit PDF icon (Adobe did the same thing but with its PDF icon). All the graphic files still show the thumbnail just fine. For this screenshot, I turned on the Preview Pane at the right and even it only shows "no preview available".

    Hi Connie,

If you've been chasing the tale on this one then I'm sure you know it's a real smack in the forehead issue. Is you system 64 or 36 bit Vista ?? I came across a possible fix for the issue on 64 bit systems but don't believe it works on 32 bit (but I don't suppose it could hurt to try it if you export the registry value before you mess with it, so if it borks anything, you can set it right again pretty easily.

Take a look here for the fix. I found it at the bottom of this thread in the Adobe Forums. The problem is VERY old.

It's a bug but there's a fix available that works fine for me and many others: Fixes for 64-bit Adobe Reader preview handler and thumbnails

(Same answer as DocWatson's, which I hadn't seen; but I'll leave the direct link to the fix here in case it's useful.)

Yeah guys -- been to pretentiousname several times, but (sorry about this Doc, should have said it sooner) I'm running 32-bit Vista. Am afraid to try a 64-bit fix on a 32-bit OS.

It certainly IS a very old problem. Apparently, something messed up several years ago, but I was lucky enough to have avoided it until a few months ago. I can't believe how often I used that capability until I no longer have it.

I even considered re-installing Adobe Reader AGAIN, just to see if something magically worked. One of the MANY MANY Google results I browsed mentioned a PDF reader (or software) that supposedly would (I think) fix the thumbnail issue. I guess I'll just go re-Google & see if I can find it again.

Thanks so much for trying. Much appreciated.

OMG. I've spent the last hour re-googling and I finally found the PDF viewer that actually shows PDF thumbnails in the Details Pane (AND in the Preview Pane)!!! It's SumatraPDF -- http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/...df-reader.html NAYY (No Association, Yada Yada).

    Happy Camper once again!

Thanks for posting back with that Connie. It may not be a "fix", but it is a solution.

sewlady, glad you solved your problem.

In Win 8 I can choose either the Preview Pane (as shown in my screen shot above) or the Details Pane (as shown in your screen shot above). I do not know if this is available in Vista or not. Both show up to the right of the main window, not under as your shot shows.
