    And so the saga begins

Well, I am downloading Win 8 Pro. It took several tries before I could pay for my first copy, but finally succeeded. I suspect the payment servers were busy.

I had to do this from my Win 7 partition as my Win 8 partition is the Ent Eval edition which does not qualify for the upgrade. I will restore the Win 7 Image on my wife's PC before I start her upgrade.

The total download with my ISP (cable) is less than 15 minutes. I will repost as time goes on.

The plan is to Custom Install over Win 7 with a DVD. Before hand I will delete the Win 8 partition and during the installation I will format the Win 7 partition. Eventually my plan is to end up with an OS partition of about 75 Gb and the remaining space for my Data partition. The download is almost done so I will be off for a while.

    Wish me luck.

First update. Deleted Win 8 Ent eval, Used Partition Wizard to do some re-partitioning work, Downloaded Win 8 Pro (less than 15 minutes, verified download approx. 2 to 3 minutes, getting files ready approx. 10 minutes, then asked how would I like to install, Now, from desktop, or from removable media. I chose removable media. Then asked USB or DVD, I chose DVD. then prepared the ISO file and saved it where I wanted it saved. I then burned to DVD.

I then booted to the DVD and formatted partition, then installed Win 8 Pro. Once that was done, started on my customization efforts. Installed Classic Shell then went to town.

At this point I had to run some errands.

2 hours later started installing all the apps I use and finish customizing. I will update again when finished.

So far no surprises, everything easy.

I preordered my Windows 8 Pro disks from Microcenter for 38.88 and picked them up today to avoid the download queues. Came with both the 32 and 64 bit disks.

Ran the install from Windows 8 RP on an SSD that had no previous qualified OS and it didn't complain. Setup went smoothly with no issues. It transfered over my personal data and created a Windows.old directory with the previous Program Files and User directories. Currently in the process of installing my programs and recustomising to put Classic shell on and kill the hot spots. (Sorry Drew)

Would you not know this ? My Acer power supply just gave up the ghost. It only sees in BIOS, one DVD-rw and one HD, C:\. No second HD nor DVD-RW. But it seems to install fine anyway, W-8 that is. Time will tell if it completes. I have saved the D/L stuff to a SDHC, just in case.

Medico, I need to have your opinion on this, is the fact that both devices are not even seen in the BIOS pages, a sure sign that the PS is finicky ?

I cannot say it is a sure sign. Have you tried to open up and ensure the cables are still inserted completely?

Could be a PS, could be a MB.

Try using HWMonitor to check voltages.

    OK, here we go.

4 to 5 hours (unsure exactly) all apps installed, customizations complete, ready to run full time. DONE!

I'm sure I will be tweaking here and there.

I have not received a key for Media Center. I have requested a key twice on separate emails (my ISP and Hotmail). Nothing yet. Anybody know anything about this?

Just have to make a final Image and I'm all set. Win 7 Ultimate gone (on an Image) Win 8 Ent. Eval. gone.

OK, Final Image created and then Restored to verify. All is well.

5 hours and this is what I did:

Install Win 8 Pro plus all customizations I list in my tutorial. Hide Charms, install Classic Shell, set up Shutdown, Restart and Log Off icons. Set up picture password. Grant Admin Full Control, disable hibernate.

Install all the following apps including all upgrades:
    CCleaner
    inSSIDer
PDF-X Change Viewer Pro with Xchange Lite
    Revo Uninstaller Pro
Live Essentials (WLM and Photo Gallery/Movie Maker)
    7-Zip
Zinio Reader 4 including Adobe Air
    Alps Touchpad
    Sony Webcam
    Canon MP620 Pixma Printer
    EasyBCD
    FileHippo.com
    ieSpell
    Last Pass
    Logitech Setpoint
    MalwareBytes Antimalware Pro
    AVG 2013 AV free
MS Office Pro and MANY updates
    Silverlight
    MS Streets and Trips
    Partition Wizard
    BN Nook app
    PDA Net 3.5
    Privacy Mantra
    Quicken 2012
    Speccy
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    Team Viewer 7
    Who Crashed
    Acronis TIH 2013
    Windows Club Ultimate Tweaker

I then customized the Win 8 Start Screen and downloaded a couple of games. Did all App Store updates available.

Set up my Homegroup and sharing. (yea I know, but Homegroup works fine for me)

I'm sure there are a few things I forgot to mention.

This was all completed in less than 5 hours including 2 full Image creations and Restoration.

I do like Win 8 Pro.

    Still no Media Center.

That's what I figured. Thanks Bruce. I was hoping that by today they would be available. Oh well I'll just wait.

You could try installling VLC player for now so can use DVDs. Until Media centre is available (if ever).

Just got my Media Center key. Install required several reboots but wa straight forward.

Also discovered I can now access my laser printer attached to my Windows 7 desktop from my Win 8 laptop. Couldn't make it work with Win 8 RP. Also, my Synaptics touch pad driver is fully functional after I downloaded the Win 8 version from Acer. Couldn't get the "disable touchpad if external mouse connected" option to work on 8 RP but works great now. Looks like they fixed a lot of things since the RP release.

Still not impressed with any of the Metro apps except Netflix. I like that one.

I also log into a local account rather than a Microsoft account. I have no use for the sync options and don't care to have my settings broadcast to the Microsoft cloud periodically.
