    My Windows security center service is turned off and won't turn on.

    Hi - My Windows security center service is turned off and won't turn on. Tried the security scan and FixIt service from Microsoft but it only confirms that the security isn't on. I came across the info that a different firewall may have been installed that disabled WIndows Security. This may have been the Norton Protection I bought with the computer and which has now expired.

    Any clues?

    Uninstall all the Norton stuff. This should turn on the Firewall. Then install an AV/Am app of your choice. I have used both AVG 2013 AV free and MSE free.

    Dagaan,

    After uninstalling the Norton application, you should use the Norton Removal Tool to ensure complete uninstallation:

    See if this kb article helps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519899.

    Also you may have picked up some malware. Download and run Malwarebytes as a check.

    OK I deleted the Norton stuff and downloaded and applied their removal tool; I still still get the same message - Security Center Service won't turn on. Help! Some malware is cruising around just looking for someone like me! Do the AVG 2013 AV free and MSE free that Super Moderator suggested work as a firewall? Thx.

    AVG 2013 AV free does not include a firewall. The paid Pro version does include a firewall.

    Ruirib - I picked up some malware a couple days ago and ran a full system scan and that's when I noticed the firewall wasn't on. And thanks Medico about there being NO firewall with the Avast - I've sticking my pinky in the USB slot. Will this prevent malware? No - seriously - the firewall still won't turn on. I'm wondering if I downloaded some other protection when the Norton Protection ended and if that turns off the Windows Firewall "Security Center Service"?

    To be clear - the message is "Windows Security Center Service is turned off" when I click on "start now" a message comes up; "can't be started" ???

    Have you cleaned the malware? Do you have a system restore point from some time before the infection?

    See if this helps with getting back the Security Center: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...d-ea3de6d8e6ad

    Thanks. The first part of that link said to enter 'service.msc' in the 'start' window - this did nothing but the reply to that said;

    "The "Restart" option was not available, I had to change the "Startup Type" via the "General" window."

    Do you know what 'General window' this is? I removed the malware and yes have a restore point before that I will try. I'm not really sure when the firewall got tuned off thought.

    The "general window" is the "general" tab in the dialog that you get when you right click a service and choose "Properties".

    I would try the System Restore option to see if, by any chance, you could go back to a time where everything was working properly.
