Dial Up Networking:Missing files from Windows CD

I recently reinstalled Windows 98 from the CD. When I setup Dial Up Networking I had problems with the connection. I had to type in my password every time I connected. So, using the CD, I removed DUN. Thenh, when I try to reinstall DUN, I keep getting messages that files are missing pmac.vxd and some .dll files.

How can there be files missing from the Windows CD? What do I do?

    Thanks,
    Gregory

Gregory, my guess is that they are modem specific files so check the drivers disk for your modem.

    Good luck

Also wthen you set up Windows did you type in an account name and password?
    Are you using this account?

In order for Windows to "Remember" passwords one must be using an account, there may be no password, but one MUST be using an account. One way to check, is sometimes in the Start button you may see "Log off ??" the ?? being the account name that is logged in.

    Hi Dave,

When I set up Windows I didn't create a password or an account. But I did both of those when I set up my email account in Outlook 2000. Windows ME doesn't require that I logon onto a network. Does Windows 98?

    Thanks,
    Gregroy

It does NOT require for to log into a network, but it needs a Windows log in to save these settings.

    Hi Dave,

I appreciate your patience in answering my questions.

I don't remember ever having to log into a Windows network in my last two years using W98. Originally, it asked to log in with a password. I ignored this so I wouldn't have top go through it every reboot. I was able to use DUN with Outlook 2000. And my email account login had my password automatically each time.

I must be missing something really obvious.

    Thanks,
    Gregory

Re: Dial Up Networking:Missing files from Windows CD

When Me was first installed or you set up this machine when you first got it, it asked for a user name and and a password. At this screen one could NOT enter a password and a password would not berequired to start windows. But the user account with the user name typed in was made. And all the autocomplete and passwaors used in IE were save based on this user. If you searched a machine that has the function working you would find a file with "pwl" this is the name of the user account(s), on that machine.

Re: Dial Up Networking:Missing files from Windows CD

    Hi Dave,

I found the .pwl file on the Windows ME system.

Back to W98 and my original problem. I tried to reload the software for the PC card modem. It seemed to install correctly. But, when I go back to Windows and tried to install DUN, I got the same message about the same files being missing.

    Now what?

    Thanks,
    Gregory

If the files you need ARE on Win98 CD, you can restore them using System Files Checker.
Click Start | Run, type SFC and hit Enter. Choose 'Restore file" and source and destination locations. Location on your Installation CD:
    [your CD-ROM drive letter]:Win98 (for example, D:Win98)
    Destination: C:Windowssystem
(if you install Windows in "Windows" folder)
    Good luck!
