Networking Win 7,8 & XP Home

There are 3 machines on my network (I don't use Home Group), my friend's XP Home laptop, her Win 7 Pro desktop and my Win 7 Pro desktop. Her machines are 32 bit, mine is 64 bit.

I have just installed Win 8 Pro on my desktop. How do I set up networking this with the other 2 machines without using Home Group. (I know you can't use Home Group to network with XP machines anyway).

One related point-whenever I check Services on my desktop machine the Computer Browser service is off, although it is set to Automatic. How can I correct this?

    Advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

The windows 7 instuctions should work for Windows 8. You can also enable Home Group between the Window 7/Windows 8 computers withou impacting XP networking.
