    to do items

on my to do list I have the items sorted by start date. However, I don't need to see items that have a start date more than a month away. How do I set that up.

Try setting up a filter on the view you are using.

With Tasks displayed, click on View in the Ribbon. Then click on "View Settings". Then Click on the "Filter" button. Then click on the "Advanced" tab. In the "define more criteria" section click on the "Field" dropdown. Select the date field you wish and then fill in the criteria you need.
