Exclamation Problem with open network + web auth on Windows 8

    Hello guys,
I have installed Windows 8 today, and I have only one problem : I can't connect to an open network.
The school's network is an open network (no password) with a web authentification. So I connect, I have the icon that says that I don't have internet, normal. Then I try to open a webpage, any (should get redirected to the auth page), I just get a network problem, can't load page etc. (as if no connection).

I tried using the Intel Wifi connection utility which was a mindbend to find/download thanks to their site : didn't work, same behavior.

Any idea before I go back to Windows 7 ?

    Thanks for you help guys,

    Crown.

Crown, Welcome to the Lounge. Be advised I edited your post to remove what we consider a vulgar word. Please watch what you write as this is a family orientated forum

Try the Network trouble shooter. Right click the network icon and select troubleshoot.

Thanks and thanks. If I find a more suitable world, I shall edit the post myself again.

My system isn't in english, so here's what I can translate from what it told me :
"The problem couldn't be fixed. Here's some details :
The computer is well configured, but the following ressource (http://microsoft.com) wouldn't answer."

Basically. I may add that the network I try to connect is also heavily firewalled : only web, messenger and VPN works. But I need to login first before I can use a VPN.

I could try to contact them, but they will respond in like a week. I need a working distribution for the coming week, so I'll have to reinstall tomorrow. You assume well, this is a wireless connection.

Yes I can, but it will be ad-hoc mode from a Linux distribution. (that is connected to the network I'm trying to connect on Windows 8)

Yes, Intel. And I installed the drivers along the Intel Connection Utility.

I already dedicated 5 hours to finding the correct variables.

    Thanks for your dedication.

Weirdly, my answer is showed before yours, but anyway, here's a point I'd like to emphasis : the Windows 8 computer can connect on other networks with, for example, WPA security or WEP.

EDIT: Oh, so you can actually post in the future . How convenient.

I'm sure the problem can be fixed. It's a matter of finding the correct variables.

There has been a problem today in the Lounge. The timing seems to be constantly switching among other problems. It is possible someone else can jump in here with some other ideas. I'm not really a network person.

Hm, I can try reinstalling then. On Windows 7, it worked like that yes. No problem, it was just a pain in the behind. I'll reinstall in 15 hours~, if no new idea arises. And if it still doesn't work, back on Windows 7.

There is a big network provider here that runs many WiFi hotspots and it behaves the same way as yours - it's free and when you try to do something, you are redirected towards a login page in your browser. I really don't like it, but the point is that it works fine on my Windows 8 Pro running laptop and I did not need to do anything special to get it working.

It's the same for me when I take my personal laptop to work and connect Windows 8 to the Guest WiFi network (which is what I'm using now).

I get asked "Do you have a user name and password for this Wi-Fi hotspot?"; "Yes" or "No, open a web browser to complete the connection".

I choose the latter and then click OK on the web page which it takes me to automatically to accept the conditions.

Nice . I thought this kind of window opened only for special security, such as WPA2 Enterprise. One of the network I connect to around also has that, and on Windows 7, a window opens asking me a Username & Password. EAP kind of thing.

It's possible if this is not happening on Win 8 it is due to the pop up blocker blocking the domain. I would add that domain to the ignore list and see if that helps.

Of the browser ? I use Firefox, and if a popup is blocked, it tells me. Plus, I can add that the popup actually pops up when I'm about to connect.
