    when I installed the memory, I looked at the BIOS settings, and I believe I set it to 'auto' and 'by spd' for the memory timings. I've since done some research on memory timings, and I'm guessing that the spd info was either bad or "nonstandard". If I get the chance I'm going to go back at it and use 'manual' timings and see if that solves the problem. Thanks for all your insight!!
