    Angry Can't access Windows Update

    I have an eMachines E525 laptop that will not allow me to use Windows Update. When I try I get the following message;
    "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"
    I try restarting, same thing. I've looked for some "setting" that might be causing this problem, no luck. Tried eMachines website, no way to get any help unless the machine is still under warranty. Anyone have any ideas??

    Choose Run or Search and type Services. Look in the list of services and see what WU looks like. When you double click the Windows Update service you will get the second window. See if yours is set to automatic.

    Hi Ted,

    Looks like you have a screenshot from Windows 8 there, the screenshot below from Windows 7 is subtly different! Note how the Windows Update service is started and appears to keep running.

    Your initial advice still stands though.

    The first thing I would do is to run Malwarebytes ( www.malwarebytes.org ) to eliminate the possibility of Malware. Afterwards, if Windows Update still doesn't work, try the Microsoft fixit here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/

    If it still doesn't work, Microsoft provides free support for Windows Update issues.

    Browni, thanks, I did not realize any difference between Win 7 and Win 8 for the WU service.

    I see Win 8 WU service is called Trigger Start. I assume that means the service starts automatically when the WU exe is selected, whereas in Win 7 it is automatic delayed start, but is always running. I did not know that. See that I learned something new today.
