Unable to Open Word Document (Word 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1))

    Hi to All
Have been working on an 85 page Word document, finished it last night, saved etc etc, went to open it this morning and I have an error message as follows: "The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. *Check the file permissions .... etc"
Microsoft has a couple of posts on this but neither applied, have tried searching the net for other answers but none seem to apply.
Computer is running Win98SE, Word is within Office 2000 patched up to SR-1 and my system run as smooth as a baby's proverbial.
Any ideas how I can get this beast to open and therefore print - without losing my formatting.

    Hi,

Not a good sign. Hopefully someone else will have a better solution, but here are a few things to try:

In File>Open, try opening the file as an .rtf, .htm or a Word 6.0/95 format - maybe one of these will work.
Launch WordPad and open the file from that app.
Find the file in Windows Explorer, and see if you can open it from there.

    Good luck,
    Gary

    Thanks Gary
Yes I can open it in Wordpad but of course the formatting is all shot so I won't lose it but gee even the copy we sent as an attachment via email does the same thing.
tried everything else you have mentioned and a few others but still no luck.
    Cheers.

Just thought of another one (which you've probably also tried):

Create a new document, then Insert > File the dodgy doc.

No hadn't tried that, but got the same message.

    Thanks again Gary.

    Try this:
    Go to Find/File & Folders & search for *.tmp;~*.do?;~*.wbk
Delete everything you find. Reboot & see if this helps.

Tried this Phil and still no joy.

Finding it very confusing, as I click on properties and it's all there both size, location and it's stats.

    Thanks Phil

Tried copying it to c:trouble.doc and opening from there? That might help rule out file and folder name issues.

Re: Unable to Open Word Document (Word 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1))

A couple of more troubleshooting steps that I got off the Microsoft web site some time ago (forgot to save the URL):

    1. Open the Damaged Word Document in Draft Mode
To switch to draft mode in Word, use either of the following procedures:

On the View menu, click Normal. On the Tools menu, click Options, select the View tab, and select the Draft Font option.

You might be able to open the document using a macro that turns off screen updating, opens the document, & then turns on screen updating. Since I'm not a VBA expert, I can't help you with the macro.

    2. Here's another method: Open the File by Linking to It

This method allows you to access the document without bringing over the final paragraph mark. In addition, when you create a link, part of the header information is not read.

This method allows you to open the file if this part of the header or if the final paragraph mark is in the damaged area of the document.

Use the following steps to link to a "good: file (a file that has not been corrupted) and then change the link to point to the damaged file:

    1. Create a new document. In the new document, type "This is a Test." & save the document.
    2. Copy the text to the clipboard.
    3. Open a new document & click Edit|Paste Special.
    4. Select either Unformatted or Formatted text, and click Paste Link.
    5. On the Edit menu, click Links. The Links dialog box is displayed.
    6. Select the file name of the first linked document and click Change Source. The Open dialog box appears and asks which document you want to change the link to.
    7. Select the document you can no longer open and click Open.
    8. Click OK in the Links dialog box. The data/text from the damaged Document will appear (provided there was any recoverable data/text).
On the Edit menu, click Links, and click Break Links.

If none of these methods work, at least you have text & some of your formatting when opening it in Wordpad. Not much consolation, I'm sure.

Thanks again Phil - got half excited about this one but unfortunately ended up with "Word cannot obtain the data for the ......etc"
Great one to log away in the arsenal cupboard for future hassles.
    Thanks again mate

A bit too late perhaps, but I am new and saw that you did not solve your problem.
You could try to open the file with QuickViewPlus v. 6. It may not give you the full recovery, but it may at least give you some clues as to what is going on. I use it always when people come to me with files they can't open.

    Good Luck

Re: Unable to Open Word Document (Word 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1))

    Thanks for your response Pat.
Yes the document was created in Word 2000 - I have had similar problems in transferring Word 97 docs into Word 2000 though.
Had a wealth of helpful responses from various forums and searched my little heart out on the net, but nothing seemed to work, it just badly corrupted itself.
Ended up opening it it Wordpad and creating a new document, then re formatting it. Have a theory though which I think I have run across before (whether it's coincidence or not), but it was a manual on Word 2000 I was doing and perhaps cutting and pasting active dialog boxes as diagrams may have played a part.
This time i split it into smaller sizes and cut and paste via Paint to neutalise any active diagrams.
    Just a theory.

    Thanks again

    Hey Teunis

Thanks for your response. Ended up having to do it the long way, but for future reference could you fill me in a bit more on QuickViewPlus and maybe a link to have a look at it.

    Thanks
    Mark T
