    Activation Question Please

Just purchased a new legal version of Win XP Pro SP3 ethenticated OEM Full version etc and cannot activate it on-line, which really doesn't bother me a bit. The message reads each time I boot the I only have so many days left to activate. Two quick questions, Do I really have to activate it and what if I don't and how can I stop this message. (suppose that's three) Many thanks .....Dave

    Dave,

Yes you do have to activate. Give MS a call they'll phone activate it for you and you'll be good to go.

Good to go where, you mean it will just stop working?
I'm quite vigilant about security and not comfortable with
handing out bunch of info especially my email to specially MS.

    Estam,

You don't have to give them your email. They'll have you run a program and read them a number then they will give you a number to type in and you're authorized.

In most cases its an automated phone call and you don't have to talk to a human. Just follow the phone activation steps detailed here:

Thanks for your help and is now activated. My wife mentioned over the weekend that I'm getting a newer laptop for my birthday. Purchased from eBay and is a few years old and comes with XP pro sp2. Can I re-format and install my new win xp sp3 version and get it activated and de-activate this one and give this computer to my brother who will install win 7. Thanks,

    Dave...

If its the full version, you should be able to install it on the new laptop but why not just install sp 3 on the os currently on the new laptop?

Thanks Jerry, Who knows where the new ones been, prefer to start from scratch and I've put the bucks in this new full version so it's just as easy to use it. A friend of mine purchased a used computer (HP5100) from an outfit in California and had XP installed and when he tried to have it verified to down load something from MS it would not verify it and mentioned it was a bulk activation code so he just left it the way it was. If I reformat at least I'll know where it's been.

    Dave..
