    Lost .wav file type

I am using Windows 98 and have suddenly lost the ability to play sound objects. The icon next to a .wav file has become the standard non-registered file type icon, yet nothing happens when I double-click on it - the "Open with" dialog does not display.

I have gone into Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types and although the WAV file type is not listed, when I try to create an entry for it, Explorer tells me that it already exists.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Have you installed any new software recently - i.e. about the time you lost your sound?
E.g. anti-virus software, media players, etc....

    Thanks Leif.
No, I didn't install anything. Turned the screen saver on, which I've since turned off because it conflicted with my internet somehow and I couldn't get online.
No, just turned on the computer and zap, nothing. Had a few crashes, but hey, this is Windows 98, after all!
Still going through the KBs, but no luck as yet.

Can you right_click and get 'Open with...' ?
If so, you should get to the program selection window with the 'Always use this program..' tick box.
