We need more info. I assume Vista OS, why the repair install, what symptoms are you experiencing.

A repair install will most likely not fix this problem. Many viruses disable critical system files. That has probably happened on your system. It sounds to me as though you will need to do a complete reinstallation. As a part of the reinstallation, when you get to the screen, choose Custom Install. On the next screen, choose Disk options (Advanced) and highlight your OS partition and select format. The installation will then continue.

If you do not have Vista installation media, you might be forced to purchase this media. I believe Vista does not have an ISO download available to use to create a DVD installation media. If that is the case you might want to consider the Win 8 Pro upgrade for $40, although you would still need to do the Custom Install.

Programs, no. Data, yes. Copy all your data to a flash drive, then make sure you run AV scans on the flash drive with a solid AV app and MalwareBytes Anti-malware.

Good luck on the rebuild. I think you will find the results will justify the time spent on re-installing your OS and apps. This is also a great time to decide if you really need some of those apps you rarely use.

Make a list of all the apps presently installed so you know what, or what not to re-install.

Sounds like an error reading the DVD. Try taking the disk out and cleaning it. Also look for any deep scratches.

That could be, I never thought of a defect on the actual DVD.
