Counting names (98 and XP)

I have names in a column that includes blank cells. How can I count the number of names?

If the names are in A1:A150, then the following array formula will count the number of non empty cells in that range:

=SUM((A1:A15<>"")*1)

You must hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys when you press enter to array enter that formula.

There is also a counta function that will count cell with text and ignore blank cells.

    =counta(a1:a150)

Thanks to both of you. For some odd reason I cannot now understand, I had convinced myself that COUNTA required a second argument - but I hadn't check the help screen. Arrogance, I guess - or lack of sleep ...
