Unhappy coincidence or cause and effect

I stalled applying the update for Java but when I did, I was unable to get online on Firefox, Chrome, or IE. There was a box that popped up on Chrome with suggestions on what to do. One of those was turn off the DSL and turn it back on which worked. I uninstalled the Jave update and waited about a week and went to the Java site and downloaded and installed from the Java site. The same thing occurred. I now do not have Java installed but there are times that we cannot access the internet so I had to show my husband how to reset the DSL. Does anyone have any ideas or fixes?

Try installing the latest Java, and then removing it from all browsers:

I haven't seen your particular situation before, but I believe that the above is worth trying.

Everything worked fine until this last java update (15) when the same thing happened. So I repeated your instructions and we are where we should be again.
